Misty Dawn Surguy Memorial Scholarship

Misty Dawn Surguy overcame much adversity in her life. She was born June 23, 1978 with congenital heart disease. Because of the disease, Misty had lung damage and had to go through multiple surgeries as she was growing up. Doctors said that she would not live into her teens. Misty beat the odds and lived until she was 29 years old, passing away on July 6, 2007.

Misty graduated from Franklin County High School in 1996. With determination, she then attended IU East, obtaining 100 credit hours. She volunteered at the Brookville Public Library, Laurel Public Library, St. Michael School Library and was an Assistant Girl Scout Leader. Because of her determination and achievements, Misty’s parents, Charles and Vickie, her grandmother, Charlotte Hull, and her sisters, Amber, Ashlee, and Aleesha made the decision to establish the Misty Dawn Surguy Memorial Scholarship Endowment in the Franklin County Community Foundation in 2007.

Each year after the Endowment fund reaches $5,000, the income from the fund is used for a scholarship to help a student with college expenses. The scholarship is awarded to a Franklin County High School senior who has had to overcome adversity in high school such as a physical or health related disability.
