Don & Janice Dunaway Family Scholarship

Janice Dunaway has lived in Brookville since 1944. She was born in Portland, Indiana to Robert and Ethel DeHoff. The family moved to Brookville when “Bob” DeHoff was sent here by the Jay Garment Company to manage the Company plant here. Janice had a younger brother, Thomas. Janice graduated from Brookville High School in 1955. Tom DeHoff graduated from Brookville High School in 1963. Tom passed away February, 2021.

Don Dunaway was born in Raymond, Indiana and lived there until he and Janice were married September 4, 1955. Don graduated from Springfield Township High School in 1952. He then attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and graduated in 1956. He received an M.B.A. degree in 1964. He worked at the Feed Materials Production Center near Fernald for forty years and retired in 1996.

Don and Janice had four children, Karla born in 1956, Eric born in 1960, Joel born in 1961 and Matthew born in 1965 (he died in 1970).

Since retiring Don has served as County Historian and President of the Franklin County Cemetery Commission. He has written several books on local history. He has since retired as County Historian and from the Cemetery Commission. Janice has been a devoted wife for more than 65 years and devoted mother of her children. She has made many quilts for her family including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also a talented artist. She sang in the Brookville United Methodist Choir for more than 40 years.

Don and Janice have recently established the Donald & Janice Dunaway Family Scholarship. The fund will provide scholarships for graduating seniors who reside in Franklin County and plan to study in one of the following areas: Chemistry, Physics, Math, History or Music.
