The Justin Girdler Memorial Scholarship was established in 2002 by Bob and Laura Girdler to honor their son, who was killed in a car accident. The annual scholarship is provided to a graduating student pursuing a career in carpentry, welding, masonry or other technical-related field, demonstrating financial need.
Justin was born September 18, 1976. He grew up in Ross, Ohio, moving with his family to Franklin County when he was in the fifth grade. He attended Brookville Elementary and graduated from FCHS in 1994. He attended Ball State University, and despite success in school, he decided to follow his heart and become a Union Carpenter. Known for simple acts of kindness, he loved big trucks, sports and NASCAR. Justin Girdler will be remembered by the title of his favorite Charlie Daniels Band song “Simple Man”.
In 2002 Bob and Laura began the Justin Girdler Memorial Softball Tournament to remember their son and raise funds for charitable acts in his memory. With the proceeds they began the Justin Girdler Memorial Scholarship in the Franklin County Community Foundation.
